Why The Younger Millenials are Turning to Botox

botox younger women
When Botox Cosmetic first gained FDA approval in the early 1990's it was marketed to an older demographic of mainly women in their fifties and sixties.  While that demographic is still heavily getting their Botox the atmosphere is changing, as more men and more younger women are turning to Botox at a much younger age.  In our Orlando Medical Spa Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center the age demographic of our clients has progressively gotten younger and of course more men are coming in that never before.
So why are the Younger Millenials turning to Botox more than ever before now?
There are many different benefits to Botox than just erasing wrinkles.  In the industry, we now know the preventative benefit of Botox for the younger demographic which is now a large sector of frequent Botox users.
Women and men as young as 25-30 years old are now having Botox Cosmetic Injections regularly (every 3-4 motnhs). However, they are not just doing it to remove wrinkles, they are also using Botox to prevent more wrinkles.  Botox is the only cosmetic treatment that can relax your muscles that create elaborate expressions such as squinting.  By doing this one can no longer flex the facial muscles & make wrinkles appear or make them worse.
Those who start Botox at a younger age are actually pretty smart & saving themselves money in the long run, as they won't need as much Botox when their older. Often in the medical spa industry I find that older clients who have never tried Botox or aesthetic treatments need a large amount of work and sometimes don't understand what it takes to ease the wrinkles or the expense.  Those who have always taken care of themselves in a preventive measure at a younger age tend to need less Botox and treatments in general.

Tips for getting the Best Botox Injections

While Botox® has become a household name and is the #1 cosmetic treatment performed in the world (both surgical and non-surgical) there are still many questions and mystery surrounding it. When deciding to get Botox injections it is important to know what to look for in a treatment provider as well as how to know you are really getting Botox® Cosmetic from Allergan and not an imitation Botulin Toxin. After performing Botox® consultations for 5 years at our Orlando Medical Spa Winter Park Laser I have come up with the best tips. Here are Tips for Getting the Best Botox® Injections #1 Ask for a referral from friends. Botox® is no longer a "taboo subject" amongst friends, it's almost as common as brushing your teeth these days and even if you think you don't no anyone who uses it, I guarantee if you bring it up at least more than a few of your friends will admit to using it and can give you a great referral. By using a referral from a friend you can see the types of results you want-the friend who looks so great but natural that you didn't even realize she used Botox®! You will therefore feel comfortable with the Treatment provider before you even begin treatment and you will have an idea of what to expect. #2 Verify that you actually getting Botox® Cosmetic from Allergan: Botox® is a brand of Botulin Toxin, and is the #1 type used however there are unfortunately imported Botulin Toxins from Canada or other brands such as Dysport or Xeomin. It is important when you schedule your appointment that you ask directly if they are using Botox® Cosmetic. You then want to ask to see the bottle and look for the Botox® Allergan hollogram on the bottle. It should also be a red flag that it may not be Botox® if it is 50% less than most place or is a groupon. #3 Bring a Picture of your "younger self" so you can express exactly the way you want to look and what you loved at that time and give to the consultant or treatment provider prior to your Botox® injection. This way the provider knows exactly what you want and there will be no miscommunication. You want to be direct and clear about what you want so that you can have reasonable expectations and know that Botox® is really what you need to correct your concerns. #4 Look at Reviews of your Botox® provider and check that they are listed on the Allergan website. This will of course give you an idea of the best and allow you to feel comfortable before you go. You will also know that they order directly from Allergan and feel more comfortable with that as well. Myths & Facts about BOTOX® Cosmetic

Even though BOTOX® Cosmetic has been FDA approved since 2002 to treat wrinkles and is the #1 most popular and utilized cosmetic treatment in the world there are still many myths and misconceptions out there about BOTOX® Cosmetic.  After performing BOTOX® Cosmetic consultations at our Orlando Medical Spa "Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center" I have heard every misconception, myth, and falsehood out there.  I always take the time with clients to explain the realities of BOTOX® Cosmetic and why it is the #1 cosmetic treatment used by men and women.  In this blog I will debunk the top myths about BOTOX® Cosmetic that I have heard throughout 10 years.
Here are the top Myths & Facts about BOTOX® Cosmetic:

#1 Myth: BOTOX® will freeze my forehead and I won't be able to make any expressions.
Fact: BOTOX® Cosmetic does not have to give you a "frozen" look at all.  It is all about explaining your desires to the injector and that you want a natural look.  You should still be able to express plenty of emotions and facial expressions with BOTOX® Cosmetic injected into any area of your face.
#2 Myth: BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers such as Juvederm are the same thing.
Fact: BOTOX® Cosmetic is used to relax muscles and wrinkles while dermal fillers are used to replace volume in hollow areas of the face such as cheeks, mid-face, and lips.  One does not replace the other and they are not made of the same ingredients.
#3 Myth: BOTOX® Cosmetic is painful.
Fact: BOTOX® Cosmetic is typically injected with insulin needles which are tiny.  The injections are extremely quick and minimal with hardly any discomfort at all.
#4 Myth: BOTOX® Cosmetic is poison.
Fact: Mainly due to the fact that large amounts of the Clostridium botulinum are known to cause botulism, one of the biggest misconceptions about Botox is that it’s a poison. However,BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein derivative of a natural product that happens to block the communication channel between a nerve and a muscle. So it doesn’t actually paralyze the muscle; it simply prevents the nerve from telling the muscle to move.

FDA approves Allergan’s Botox to treat crow’s feet

If you have been noticing that your eyes tell your age, here’s a new cosmetic development that you may apply to you. Federal regulators at the FDA finally have approved Botox Cosmetic injections to treat crow’s\r\n feet (the wrinkles around the eyes). The FDA declared Wednesday 9/11 that Allergan’s Botox Cosmetic injection is the first cosmetic drug approved to treat the wrinkles and fine lines that form on the around the eyes. Allergan studied the use of the drug in 833 adults with crow’s feet who randomly received Botox Cosmetic or a sham injection. Patients who received Botox Cosmetic had fewer visible wrinkles than those who received the placebo injection. The most common side effects although rare seen in patients were slight swelling and mild pin-point bleeding at the injection site. Botox Cosmetic works by blocking the connections between nerves and muscle, temporarily relaxing muscles to make wrinkles less prominent. Botox Cosmetic is a purified form of botulinum and has had the most safety case studies of any other cosmetic\r\n injection in the world over the past fifteen years. Orlando Medical Spa Winter Park Laser has been injecting Botox Cosmetic for 7 years and is excited to finally have the FDA approval to treat crow's feet as this is a common concern amongst women and men. Men love their "Brotox" injections. For more information go to http://www.winterparklaser.com/services/dermal-fillers-orlando/botox/

How to Say Good Bye to Crow's Feet

The skin around the eyes tends to wrinkle first because it is thinner than the rest of the skin on the face by 30%. It also wrinkles more easily because of sun damage, squinting & dehydration. So it is no surprise that "crows feet" or wrinkles around the eye is a common concern & complaint among women and men around the world and in our Orlando medical Spa-Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center. Fortunately there are several ways to say good bye to crow's feet for good. The first important step is a hydrating eye cream-preferably one that is medical grade as it will actually penetrate to the dermis. We like Skinmedica TNS Eye Repair-human Growth factors and peptides work in synergy to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A great eye cream will keep the area hydrated and help with the fine lines. One of the most instantly gratifying ways to treat crow's feet is with Botox Cosmetic. This is especially good if you squint a lot or have had a lot of sun damage. Botox Cosmetic relaxes the wrinkles around the eyes allowing the wrinkles to cease and prevents the wrinkles from getting worst as the muscles can't be made stronger. If one is looking for a more permanent solution-Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing will completely resurface the area & minimize the wrinkles. We prefer combo ablative laser resurfacing. Fractional ablative wrinkle treatment uses beams of laser light that penetrates skin to just the right depth and with just the right level of heat to evoke a dramatic healing response that promotes collagen production, diminishing the appearance of fine lines around the eyes http://www.winterparklaser.com/services/fractional-laser-resurfacing/. How to Get the Best & Safest Botox Cosmetic Treatments

The Medical Spa industry is still fairly new (about 20-25 years old) and continuously grows with new laws and FDA supervision of treatments. However laws still vary and their are still many medical spas, and physicians that abuse the system in order to save money. I bring this up because while the prices of cosmetic treatments have gone down due to the economy there are still those that want to save even more by looking for the "cheapest" and easiest deal. One of the biggest treatments that has become of topic lately is Botox Cosmetic. Botox Cosmetic is an amazing treatment that has become so popular because it's easy, affordable, and it works! However, Federal regulators have warned more than 350 medical practices that Botox they may have received from a Canadian supplier is unapproved and could be counterfeit or unsafe. So I wanted to give a few tips to finding a good, legitimate, and safe medical spa or physician's office to get Botox Cosmetic treatments. Here are the top 3 Red Flags for unsafe Botox Injections 1.) If the price is too good to be true-it probably is! Why: Botox generally runs $9-$13 per unit in the Central Florida area, so if you see it for $5-$8 per unit this could be a generic form of Botox-not what you want! 2.) The location is not supervised by a physician or they only do it once a month (such as your local salon or nail spa). Why: You want to go somewhere that specializes in Botox injections such as a medical spa or Doctor's office that does it on a daily basis and is Board Certified and supervised by a Doctor. 3.) If you do not see the bottle of Botox Cosmetic (by Allergan) that they are using to inject you. Why: The only FDA approved brand of Botox is Botox Cosmetic by Allergan & you can ask to see the bottle-there should be a hologram on it as well that says Allergan. General tips: Do your research-ask who performs the treatment and if they are certified & how much experience they have. If you walk in and feel uncomfortable or the nothing is explained to you prior to the treatment then leave. Read online reviews or ask your friends for referrals! The Benefits of Starting Botox at an earlier age

In our Orlando Medical Spa-Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center we have clients from ages 24-65 getting Botox Cosmetic to correct and prevent wrinkles. The myth is that only older women need or want Botox Cosmetic. The fact is that if you start Botox at a younger age if can prevent you from needing more procedures in the future and from getting deeper lines. According the American Society for Plastic Surgery over 80,000 women under 30 had been treated with Botox Cosmetic. We now live in an era where "Botox" is as common to hear as "manicure" and it's no longer a secret kept in the closet. The younger generation aptly named "Botox Babies" are aware of the non-invasive cosmetic procedures available that can slow down the aging process. Because Botox Cosmetic is a neurotoxin it works it's way into the forehead, glabellar (in-between the eyebrows) and crows feet relaxing the muscles and smoothing out the wrinkles. The Extra Benefit of Botox Cosmetic for younger women and men is that it prevents wrinkles and furrow lines from worsening because when you relax the muscle you can't keep strengthening it with squinting or facial expressions. Thus this can lessen the later effects of deeper wrinkles at an older age. We find that those patients who started Botox Cosmetic at a younger age tend to need less Botox units injected and less cosmetic procedures in general than those who start at a later age. The bottom line is that Botox Cosmetic is for everyone-the only difference is how much it will take for each person but it has proven to be one of the most effective and predictable non-invasive procedures to treat wrinkles and is still the #1 requested cosmetic procedure both surgical or non-surgical in the world! Cosmetic Fillers are Great Alternative to Surgical Facelift

Injectable procedures offer a wonderful alternative to invasive surgical procedures such as a facelift. Many injectable cosmetic fillers offer results that can last for over one year, and fillers are quick, painless, and requires little or no recovery time. We perform anti-aging consultations on a daily basis and the most common question is what is the difference between all of the types of injectables on the market and which one is best for me. This should give everyone some insight. The first injectable procedure many people think of is BOTOX Cosmetic. BOTOX Cosmetic is a purified protein comprised of botulinum toxin type A. The main ingredient in BOTOX Cosmetic relaxes contractions in certain facial muscles. These contractions normally lead to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. BOTOX Cosmetic has a long history of proven results, and provides a smoother appearance for three to four months. However, dermal fillers and BOTOX accomplish different results: BOTOX relaxes wrinkles and is best for forehead and around the eyes while while dermal fillers restore lost facial volume and are best for lips, and lines around the mouth or naso-labial folds. There are many dermal fillers on the market. Some of the most popular ones are as follows: - Juvederm, Restylane, & Perlane - They all contain hyaluronic acid (Perlane & Juvederm Ultra Plus have larger molecules for a deeper fill) and they work to plump up the areas in your skin which have lost volume to promote a softer, more youthful appearance. Depending on the treatment area as well as your unique skin, a single treatment of either of these fillers can provide results for 9-14 months. - Radiesse - a smooth gel injectable filled with microspheres of calcium hydroxyapatite great for very deep naso-labial folds. A single 1.5cc syringe of this filler can last 12-16 months. Both BOTOX Cosmetic and facial fillers can be used to reduce the appearance of fine lines, deep wrinkles, and creases from almost any area of your face. In addition, Juvederm and Restylane can both be used for lip augmentation. No single solution is best for every patient. Talk to your local medical spa, nurse or plastic surgeon about the best option for you, also research who in your state is licensed to perform these treatments and that they are supervised by a Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist.

Why Botox is "In" Amongst the Younger Crows

When Botox arrived on the market 10 years ago, it was 40-50 years old with wrinkles that clamored to their local medical spa to try out the new anti-aging elixir in markets mostly like L.A. or New York. Fast forward 10 years later and Botox is as popular as a facial and available nationwide. Also, now knowing the preventative benefit of Botox the younger demographic is now a large sector of frequent Botox users. Women and men as young as 25 are now having Botox Cosmetic Injections. However, they are not just to remove wrinkles they are using the wonder drug to prevent future wrinkles. Botox is the only cosmetic treatment that can relax your muscles that create elaborate expressions such as squinting. By doing this one can no longer flex the facial muscles & make wrinkles appear or make them worse. This is actually a smart trick, those who start out younger with Botox will need less aggressive procedures in the future when they age and start to have real wrinkles. Often in the medical spa business I have so many clients who are 45 and have never done anything to their skin-they have a hard time understanding how many treatments and the amount of money it will take to correct their issues compared to those who have taken care of their skin they often just need a little Botox or a chemical peel to freshen things up. The "Liquid Facelift" Facts with Dermal Fillers

In today's society plastic surgery is seen as extreme as many patients are finding "lunch time" procedure that provide a great benefits toward anti-aging, with little down-time and that costs a fraction of regular surgical procedures. One of the most popular non-surgical treatments is the "liquid face-lift" which utilizes various types of dermal fillers and injectables such as Botox cosmetic to lift, and tighten the face in 20-45 minutes with little down-time and normally for around $1000-$1500 with long lasting and amazing results.

A "liquid face-lift" using cosmetic dermal fillers can be performed on several areas of the face or focus on "trouble spots" such as the deep naso-labial folds (laugh lines) around the nose and mouth. This treatment can give one high cheeks again, mask bags under eyes, lift brows, lift jowls and reshape and restore plump lips, rounded faces and plump cheeks. Once corrected this procedure can make women and men look 10-15 years younger instantly.

A non-surgical Liquid Face Lift involves the use of advanced dermal fillers, usually in combination with BOTOX® and Dysport® The injectables used are among a group of 2nd generation dermal fillers that provide more enduring results than earlier products. The new group of 2nd generation, advanced dermal fillers includes JJUVEDERM Ultra Plus, Radiesse®, Restylane®, and Perlane® .

Non surgical face lift While all of the products work slightly different; all dermal fillers replace volume which is something that not even an actual surgical facelift or lasers can do. This is am amazing "lunch time" procedure that when performed by an experience and licensed Nurse Practitioner, Physician's Assistant or physician can yield amazing results.

Men are Anti-Aging for Love

When Cupid's bow strikes, we do things least expected of us. And in the case of men, it is more so, as days before Valentine’s Day, dermatology experts are registering a rise in the footfall of male clients seeking skin treatments.Experts tell us that there is almost a 40% rise in the number of men asking for treatments. While laser hair removal is a huge hit among men, there are many who ask for a treatment called Dermal Fillers.

“Dermal cosmetic fillers such as Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse or Restylane are used to replace volume loss in the lips, cheeks & naso-labial folds around the nose and mouth that are usually caused by natural fat pad loss in the cheeks. Fillers act as an instant liquid face-lift to replace loss volume” informs James Farrell M.D.-plastic surgeon & medical director of Winter Park Laser. Botox and Dysport have also become increasingly popular amongst men as they are finally realizing they have to get in the "cosmetic game" to keep up with their younger looking counter parts.

“Men are starting to get concerned with their physical appearance, and it is only becoming more popular, many laser treatments like ablative or non-ablative fractional laser resurfacing or IPL (intense pulsed light) photo-facials to erase sun damage and wrinkles are very popular” says Dr James Farrell, plastic surgeon, Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center. They can now have treatments performed that erase wrinkles within 20-60 minutes and have very little down-time so that no one knows what they have had done.

At Winter Park Laser at our medical spa in Orlando we treat men of all ages and walks of life-from typical masculine construction workers to male models-dermal fillers, laser treatments and Botox offer all men a simple alternative to looking older than their partners-it also helps in a competitive job market where looking younger could help seal the deal on a job contract. Manly Botox & other Cosmetic Treatments for Men

Manly Botox & other Cosmetic Treatments for Men

When Botox became popular 2 decades ago along with lasers it was mainly used by women, however men are now getting bitten by the Botox bug. Statistics show that about 250000 Botox procedures were performed on men alone in the United States last year, making it the leading cosmetic treatment for men; so much so that it has gained the nicknames "Brotox" and “Boytox.”

Men have the same aging concerns as women-wrinkles, sun damage, sagging skin so why shouldn't they be able to fix them. Well now that social norms have given the wink and nod for the green light on laser skin resurfacing, fillers and Botox men are stepping our of their man caves and into medical spas. Competition in the job markets also plays a part in the influx as men want to stay looking young and healthy for that career competitive edge.

Botox is a natural and purified protein that temporarily reduces contractions of the facial muscles that cause lines, by blocking nerve transmissions, leaving the skin unwrinkled. This creates a smooth and a more youthful appearance.

Botox Cosmetic is a simple and nonsurgical procedure that is injected into the facial muscles using tiny insulin needles. It is used for forehead lines, crow’s feet around the eyes, frown lines,&brow lift (when one eyebrow is lower than the other).

Contrary to what most people think, Botox does not freeze facial expressions, but it softens them. It only takes about 10 to 15 minutes for the treatment but results take up to 2 weeks to completely set. Side effects are not long-term, with some minor bruising that disappears in a week’s time. Botox Cosmetic should be affordable but don't go with the "cheapest" as you always want pure Botox from Allergan (look for the hologram on the bottle). You can also take advantage of Allergan's free point program (Brilliant Distinctions) that will save you $25-$50 each treatment.

Doctors say that men need higher doses than women, probably because they have greater muscle mass. It has also been observed that larger and stronger men need more units per treatment area than small-boned men.

The best part about Botox is that this is equality in a new sense where men are allowed to take care of themselves in the same ways that men have for years. For more information on Botox or other treatments go to www.winterparklaser.com

Good Botox Treatments Vs. Bad Botox Treatments

I love this story-as we only use Botox Cosmetic from Allergan and you can check our hologram on the bottle any time to make sure that is legitimately Botox Cosmetic. Unfortunately there have been some alarming instances of companies purchasing "off-label" botox that has caused terrible results, here is an article on this issue:
Ashley Roberts CW33 News

Uptown Dallas—
New Year celebrations are upon us. 2012 marks a fresh start, a time for resolutions, and for many...a chance to get that new, more youthful appearance.

“We’re seeing an explosive growth of procedures to make people look more beautiful, and Botox is definitely one of them,” says cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Adelglass, M.D., F.A.C.S.

He's always ready to make a pretty face more beautiful.

“You can see the hologram on this bottle – this is an original bottle of Botox,” says Dr. Adelglass.

He says a hologram on the bottle is one sure-fire way to know that Botox is the real deal. But Dr. Adelgass does warn consumers to proceed with caution when it comes to getting such treatments.

“There are a lot of importers and people are trying to buy it inexpensively through foreign channels and then use it on their patients,” he explains.

Just this week he received a letter in the mail with different out-of-the-country Botox options that he could potentially buy.
“Well, I think this is illegal,” says Dr. Adelglass.

Illegal or not, he says this is an increasing trend. Which is perhaps why some North Texans say "Botox" is not on their "To Do" list.

“Just because I’ve heard like the horror stories and then they don’t have like their natural expressions,” says Erika Gomez.
Others say they are not opposed to it.

“I would never use it personally, but I don’t fault people for trying to improve their appearance by any means,” says Steven Schwartz.

Dr. Adelglass says if you are looking for that New Year, New You "pick me up", it's all about doing your research first.

“And believe it or not, there is an importance to having a doctor [do this procedure] because this is a medical procedure. Botox, Deport - it can only be sold to physicians,” he says.

Dr. Adelglass also suggests using caution when it comes to purchasing cosmetic procedures via discount websites. He says this could be a red flag to potential "Botox Gone Bad" horror stories.

Dysport Vs. Botox

Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® are to injectables for wrinkles as Pepsi is to Coca-Cola-the main competitors in this category. They both have their benefits and they are both great products and we use them both in our medical spa. So now I will lay out the differences:
Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat frown lines — those pesky wrinkles between the eyebrows — in 2002. In 2009, a competitor, Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) was approved for the same use.

Both drugs have also been approved for other cosmetic and medical uses, and doctors administer them widely to smooth wrinkles even in areas they haven't been specifically approved to treat, namely around the outer corner of the eyes.

Dysport is a more affordable option most times but does spread a lot making it a great choice for forehead wrinkles but not so great for inbetween brows. A benefit of Dysport is that is sets faster than Botox.

Botox is still #1 in the market, has the most clinical research and is awesome for inbetween the brows and is safer when it comes to drooping because it doesn't spread.

Beware of "Bargain Botox Deals" online or from friends

The cosmetic industry has changed and grown greatly over the past decade and with Botox Cosmetic becoming the #1 non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the US for the past 5 years it is no surprise that many people are now looking to try the treatment. Unfortunately due to the economy many are turning to "bargain basement deals" from on-line sites or "at home" parties from friends. While Botox Cosmetic is a cosmetic procedure it is still a medical procedures and should be held to the same standards as any other medical procedure would. First of all, never purchase Botox on-line and always make sure that the Botox Cosmetic you are getting comes from Allergan (the only maker of Botox cosmetic) there is a hologram on the bottle to look for and you can ask to watch the medical practitioner mix it in front of you.

Second of all you wouldn't purchase brain surgery at 50% off so why would you do it for a treatment that is injecting something in to your body? Botox Cosmetic is an amazing treatment but should only be performed by a certified and licensed medical professional in a licensed medical spa, or medical office who are not only licensed but insured, when you have it done at someones home there is no medical malpractice insurance covering that. Do your research and look for reviews when selecting a location for Botox Cosmetic not just for the "cheapest deal."

Here is a similar article on the same problem in the UK: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2054318/Beware-Bargain-Botox-Online-deals-cosmetic-injections-misleading-unsafe.html Beware the 'Bargain Botox': Online deals for cosmetic injections 'misleading and unsafe'

Why More Men are Getting Botox

Over the past 8 years in our Medical Spa (Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center) in Orlando we have seen the number of men that walk through our door for cosmetic treatments increase every year. It started with laser hair removal-a lot of hairy backs or ingrown hairs for beards but has steadily increased in facial treatments, acne laser treatments, stretchmarks and the most recent cosmetic increase for men has been Cosmetic Fillers such as Juvederm, Radiesse, Perlane and of course the injectable Botox Cosmetic. Often times it is a wife, or girl friend that drags the man in but after he tries the treatment once he continues to come back all on his own and to refer other men! As societal norms rule "looks do matter" and many men especially single men are trying to make it count, below was a news story from NBC in south Florida about the increase in men and Botox Cosmetic. It is no surprise as Botox Cosmetic is the #1 non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the world than men are finally jumping on the band-wagon, after all they have wrinkles and insecurities just like women. It just took a few brave men to pave the way! For more information on Botox at our medical spa go to www.winterparklaser.com You can watch this video on the man getting Botox at http://www.ksn.com/content/news/health/story/More-men-getting-Botox-injections/qls6UF_bEkaVg-wzmJC7iQ.cspx

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (NBC News) – Barry Goren recently jumped back in the dating game, but he knows he has to step it up if he's going to meet the right girl.

So he decided to go to Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera to get Botox.Does he think it makes him less manly? No!Barry is not alone.

National statistics show some 300,000 men received tiny injections of Botox or some cosmetic treatments last year. And because of that, lots of "dudes" are not only opting for what's affectionately called "boy-tox" these days, but even more males are asking for something called: Sculptra.

There are differences though as to how men and women approach getting such services.
Dr. Aguilera says guys tend to be more clandestine, more covert.
The American male grooming market is worth $3.5 billion a year and a larger portion is now going to cosmetic procedures. A number that doctors say is sure to continue to surge.

What you should know about cosmetic fillers

With the growing demand for plastic surgery, it's no surprise technology has created less invasive medical products and procedures to help erase years off your appearance. You've likely seen the ads and commercials for products such as Botox and Juvederm, but do you really know what they do? Before going in for treatment here are some tips from Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Medical Spa in Orlando.

First, it's important to know the different between Botox Cosmetic/Dysport and facial fillers. Since they are both administered as injections, the products can often get incorrectly lumped into the same category, when they actually focus on different facial areas. "Botox Cosmetic or Dysport are used to temporarily relax hyperactive facial muscles, and are usually used in the forehead, glabellar (inbetween brows) or the crow's feet areas.

Botox -- the number one treatment in America is not a one-time fix as it has to be repeated every 4-6 months but it is great as a preventative cosmetic measure as it prevents wrinkles from worsening.

In contrast, as their name indicates, Cosmetic facial fillers are used to fill any areas of facial volume loss or 'deflation' and are typically used to treat thin cheeks, upper lip cheek folds, marionette lines, the depression along the jaw line in front of the jowls and thin lips. The loss of facial volume (especially the fat pads in the cheeks) is part of the aging process but can also occur at a younger age because of weight loss or heredity. Injections of facial fillers, which were once only associated with the "bee stung lips" of celebrities, can help to restore fullness to the face.

All injectables and cosmetic fillers are performed by injection. Botox Cosmetic is injected via insulin needles which are tiny and barely felt by the patient. All cosmetic fillers can have lidocaine added into them making it a painless procedure without any downtime except slight swelling and a possibility of small bruises. All injectables should be administered by a Nurse Practitioner, A Physician's Assistant, or a Physician who is trained and experienced. These treatments are an art-form and some injectors are better than other.

Why Combining Aesthetic Treatments is Powerful

Over the past 8 years in our medical spa, we have found that combining at least two cosmetic treatments (whether non-invasive treatments with products or other treatments or non-invasive with surgical) gives the optimal results clients are seeking. A recent study in the July 2011 Aesthetic Surgery Journal concluded that Botox Cosmetic patients treated with a combination of hydroquinone and tretinoin topical experienced a greater reduction in fine lines and wrinkles than those treated with Botox Cosmetic injections alone. We also find that clients receiving cosmetic injectables also benefit highly from laser resurfacing because it offers a longer lasting results to smoothing wrinkles.

Another issue that benefits from multiple treatment modalities is hyper-pigmentation (excess pigment caused by sun damage or Melasma). Utilizing chemical peels to break down pigment and dead skin cells with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photo-facial treatments offers a better solution while minimizing any negative side effects, and using hydroquinone bleaching agents with IPL treatments offers a longer lasting result for clients.

Acne also benefits from a combination of laser treatments, chemical peels, and at home products that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients with bacteria fighting ingredients.

Your medical spa and skin-care experts will help to determine the best combination treatment plans for your skin care concerns.
