IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photofacial Risks & Benefits

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photofacial Risks & Benefits

After working around medical spas and laser treatments for 7 years, my favorite treatment is IPL (Intense Pulsed LIght) Photo-facials. You see huge instant results with this 20 minute safe procedure and go straight back to work, wear makeup and have no down-time. This technology has continued to improve and Palomar is the "Mercedes" of IPL laser technology. There are mainly benefits, but of course a few minor risks with this treatment such as swelling, redness, and facial flushing, are minor and usually disappear within a few hours or days of the procedure.

Benefits of IPL™ Photofacial

The benefits of intense pulsed light therapy cover almost the entire spectrum of cosmetic dermatology. When performed by a qualified skin care specialist, IPL™ photofacial treatment can help nearly all aspects of skin aesthetics and structure.

The treatment can help repair small blood vessels that have become visible, or help eradicate sun spots or other pigmentation irregularities.
IPL™ treatment can help combat acne problems such as oil and p. bacterias&can shrink large pores.
IPL™ photofacial therapy is also excellent at treating Rosacea, & any redness in skin.
By treating a slightly deeper layer of the skin, IPL™ photofacials stimulate collagen growth by simulating minor dermal injuries, thereby helping to improve skin texture.
The cost of IPL photofacial therapy is usually minor compared to most lasers and results are seen in as little as 1-5 treatments on average.

Another benefit of IPL™ photorejuvenation procedures is that they allow for additional treatment with facials, or chemical peels that target the outermost layer of skin, the epidermis. Since IPL™ photofacials target deeper layers of the skin, they can be safely performed in conjunction with other, more superficial treatments.
IPL™ Photofacial Risks

There are relatively few long-term risks associated with intense pulsed light treatment. Short-term potential side effects of IPL™ photofacial treatment include very minor swelling, redness, and increased visibility of small capillaries. These symptoms usually begin to disappear within a few hours of treatment.

This treatment is only safe for certain skin types so consult with your skin care professional.

3 Ways to Rejuvenate Winter Skin

The Winter weather can cause havoc to the skin, here are 3 ways to rejuvenate winter skin or skin effected by sun damage, Rosacea, aging, and environmental factors.

Skin Rejuvenation Method #1: Chemical peels
Chemical peels are topically applied acids that cause controlled shedding of dead skin cell layers and help to restore and rejuvenate the skin's surface. There are various types of peels that reach various depths of the epidermis. It is always best to start with lighter peels before advancing to medium and strong depth peels. Superficial peels are best suited for combating the damaging effects of winter villains. This type of peel is designed to help smooth rough dry skin, remove sun damage and even out skin tone and has little downtime. Chemical peels are a great introduction to skin rejuvenation and an affordable option that average $95-$150

Skin Rejuvenation Method #2: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photo-facials
IPL photofacials are an amazing way to melt winter weather's effects as well as fine lines caused by holiday stress and worry. IPLs are also great for treating Rosacea, enlarged pores, broken capillaries, sun damage and hyper-pigmentation. They work by using a broad spectrum of light into the dermis. This process accelerates the skin's natural regeneration process, helping connective tissue below the surface to rebuild itself. The resulting collagen stimulation makes the skin's surface smoother & will destroy excess pigment as well as constrict broken capillaries. It typically takes 2-5 treatments and averages $199-$300 per treatment.

Skin Rejuvenation Method #3: Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatments
This is the most aggressive method but also garners the most visible results. This works by utilizing laser beam technology to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The laser is designed to improve the skin's texture, alleviate dark pigmentation and reduce the appearance of acne scars without down-time. We like Palomar 1540 fractional laser resurfacing.

Why Combining Aesthetic Treatments is Powerful

Over the past 8 years in our medical spa, we have found that combining at least two cosmetic treatments (whether non-invasive treatments with products or other treatments or non-invasive with surgical) gives the optimal results clients are seeking. A recent study in the July 2011 Aesthetic Surgery Journal concluded that Botox Cosmetic patients treated with a combination of hydroquinone and tretinoin topical experienced a greater reduction in fine lines and wrinkles than those treated with Botox Cosmetic injections alone. We also find that clients receiving cosmetic injectables also benefit highly from laser resurfacing because it offers a longer lasting results to smoothing wrinkles.

Another issue that benefits from multiple treatment modalities is hyper-pigmentation (excess pigment caused by sun damage or Melasma). Utilizing chemical peels to break down pigment and dead skin cells with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photo-facial treatments offers a better solution while minimizing any negative side effects, and using hydroquinone bleaching agents with IPL treatments offers a longer lasting result for clients.

Acne also benefits from a combination of laser treatments, chemical peels, and at home products that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients with bacteria fighting ingredients.

Your medical spa and skin-care experts will help to determine the best combination treatment plans for your skin care concerns.

Great Medical Spa Reviews for Winter Park Laser

Check out Winter Park Laser's latest great review about Photo-facials and chemical peels.
11/03/10if you want clear, smooth skin- this is your place!!!
by jodibw at Citysearch
I've always had problem skin. A not so nice mix of acne, giant pores, hyper pigmentation/sun damage mixed in with some fine lines/wrinkles. I've used every product on the planet- from Rx to OTC, prestigious to infomercial. I got facials regularly. It wasn't until I started going to the Winter Park Laser and Anti Aging Center that I really noticed a difference in my skin. Lisa gives the best facial in town- hands down. She takes a vested interest in your skin and wants it to be just a beautiful as you do. Aneta erases years if sun damage w/ IPL. All the ladies at Winter Park Laser are so caring and dedicated to making you look and feel better. If you want the skin you didn't think was possible to have, go see the ladies at Winter Park Laser and Anti Aging Center.

Photo Dynamic Therapy is An Excellent Alternative for Removing Pre-Cancerous Lesions

Photo Dynamic Therapy is an excellent treatment for the removal of pre-cancerous lesions. The greatest advantage of PDT is the ability to selectively treat an entire area of skin damage and precancers (blanket or field treatment). PDT generally decreases the likelihood of lighter or darker skin spots (post-inflammatory hyper- or hypopigmentation) caused by routine freezing with liquid nitrogen. Additionally, PDT frequently may facilitate smoother skin and an overall improved appearance, tone, color, and enhanced skin texture.

In several studies, PDT has been preferred by many patients for ease of use and recovery as compared to alternative treatments including freezing and chemotherapy creams like fluorouracil (Efudex). The PDT side effects may be milder with less downtime than with fluorouracil.

For patients with many skin lesions, PDT may be generally more effective than repeated spot treatment with topical liquid nitrogen. Some patients are unable to tolerate the prolonged treatment required with fluorouracil or imiquimod (Aldara) because of the irritation, redness, and possible downtime with these topical creams. PDT has become a very well tolerated, essentially painless, noninvasive (no needles or surgery required) procedure to help reduce sun damage and enhance the overall cosmetic outcome (particularly in sensitive areas of the face and chest).

Winter Park Laser has been performing Photo-Dynamic Therapy with Levulan for Sun Damage and Acne for over 6 years in Orlando.

How to Treat Melasma & Sun Spots

Sun damage, and melasma (mask of pregnancy) can be corected by Intense Pulsed Light Photo-Facial treatments. They even out blotchiness and give the skin a smoother tone and texture. Collagen production is stimulated and blood vessels may be eliminated. The Palomar IPL corrects all types of pigmentation caused by age, sun and hormones. The treatment only takes 15-20 minutes on average. Directly after the treatment, the pigmented areas may be darker for only a few days and then fall off. Levulan PDT for Acne Vulgaris in Orlando FL

Levulan® Photodynamic Therapy for Severe or Cystic Acne Vulgaris: The Levulan ALA topical solution is applied to the affected areas. It is left on the skin for up to an hour, and then an intense pulsed light treatment is applied for up to. The treatment is relatively painless, although sensations like tingling, stinging and burning can be felt on the areas being treated. Afterwards there is generally redness, some peeling, and sometimes swelling.

Levulan ALA acne treatment works by selectively targeting the sebaceous glands that it is absorbed into. It is converted into a photosensitizer when it has been absorbed, and the IPL then activates it. This leads to shrinking of the sebaceous glands, and destruction of p-bacteria which improves acne.
